Major wind farm proposed for Boorowa district

A $300 million wind farm is being proposed for agricultural land near Boorowa, in the region’s south.
The energy company, Epuron, wants to build between 80 and 110 turbines on a site at Rye Park which are expected to generate enough power for 90,000 homes.
The Project Manager, Simon Davey, says the area, which takes in around 40 properties, has been carefully chosen for the wind farm.
“There’s an excellent wind resource,” he said.
“We’ve been monitoring wind speeds in the Yass area for over 10 years now and have had monitoring masts on the Rye Park Wind Farm site since 2008 and the other thing that you need for a wind farm are power lines and there are some high voltage power lines that will transport the electricity generated back to load centres.”
The development application has been lodged with the New South Wales Department of Planning and an Environmental Assessment will now be carried out.
Mr Davey says the wind farm is unlikely to affect local residents and farmers.
He says the company will be consulting residents to minimise any adverse impacts.
“There are a large number of landowners who are involved in participating in the project ie. they’ll be hosting turbines.
“The area is a good area for wind farms because there’s a relatively low population density and our initial assessments suggest that there won’t be significant impacts on nearby residents.”
The company says the development will create 80 jobs during construction and seven positions once it is operating.
