Wind energy needs further study in Wisconsin

Credit:  New Richmond News, www.newrichmond-news.com 18 February 2011 ~~

Kudos to Gov. Scott Walker. I’m proud to say that I voted for him.

Finally, someone stood up to a committee where the majority of the members hold financial interest in wind energy and would profit greatly from it. In my opinion, those on the committee who were opposed to wind energy were simply there so the majority could say “we listened to the concerns of the people.” We’ve been referred to as “collateral damage” in the quest to bring wind energy to Wisconsin.

Those of you that have agreed to give up your land to host a turbine – are your children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, parents, aunts and uncles – are they just collateral damage in your mind? Being that the conversations and contracts were shrouded in secrecy, were they even aware that the world they’ve known could possibly become a wind turbine wasteland?

And if the health of any of your relatives or neighbors is adversely affected, what will your response be? Wind energy needs to be studied further to be absolutely sure that no one’s health and general welfare is compromised.

Some have insinuated that those of us opposed to wind energy are envious or jealous because of the money involved and because we were not chosen to potentially host a turbine. Really? I would not and could not take any payment from what I consider to be coming from Satan’s vaults.

Though I do not know the exact number, I am venturing to say that hosting landowners will earn less than $20 per day per turbine if this project comes to fruition. Is it really worth it? Not in my mind.

Do you really think that any of our family members will want to live in an area surrounded by these behemoths? Did you really consider what it will be like to live with these monstrosities?

I have asked people if they would ever move into an area surrounded by turbines and they said no, they would never consider it. Well, there are vacant lands available in wind farm projects because people had to leave their homes due to medical conditions brought on by wind turbines. They went belly up, bankrupt, losing everything, starting their lives over at ground zero, because the property would not sell and because they could no longer live with the conditions caused by wind turbines.

The wind developers will tell you otherwise. But how can they know? Do any of them live on a wind farm? After experiencing the noise and the shadow flicker firsthand in Joice, Iowa, I know I could not and would not subject any member of my family, nor my friends and neighbors, to such conditions. The shadow flicker was tortuous and the noise was that of a jet plane constantly flying overhead was extremely irritating.

Is that any way to live? That’s not why I came to Forest. My husband and I came to Forest to live and to die here. We will stay here as long as the Town of Forest remains unscathed by developers. I do not want to see Forest desecrated for wind energy. And we have no intention of selling off land to turn it into an urban area.

You can see Forest for the trees. Some may have even been planted by your ancestors. This area is so beautiful. The rolling hills are majestic, the cows dotting the pastures, majestic, bald eagles soaring over trees and fields, majestic. But wind turbines? Visual pollution.

If wind energy is the way, why are there wind farms that sit abandoned in other states? It takes more than wind to make the turbines operate. They consume electricity. If the wind doesn’t blow, they operate using energy that has been produced by other means. Wind energy in Forest, or anywhere else, is not the answer.

I am not your lifelong resident of Forest and I do not have extended family here. I am the one you call newbie, nimby, cidiot and whatever else you want to label me with. I am, however, opposed to wind turbines that will affect the quality of life in Forest Township. Not just my life, but yours as well. And I intend to fight to keep wind turbines out of Forest Township.
