Hearing set for today on wind turbine project

BOURNE – After a two-month hiatus, New Generation Wind is back in front of Barnstable County’s regulatory board.
The Cape Cod Commission subcommittee in charge of reviewing the seven-turbine project is set to meet at 2 p.m. today in Cape Cod Community College’s Tilden Arts Center.
New Generation Wind is proposing to build six 2.5-kilowatt turbines and one 2-kilowatt turbine in the area of a proposed Bournedale technology park on land owned by New Generation partners, the Panhandle Trust and the Lorusso family, which owns Cape Cod Aggregates.
Since the fall, the Cape Cod Commission subcommittee has held three public hearings on the project, which has divided residents and members of town boards.
The project would raise about $200,000 per year in tax revenue and reduce the town’s reliance on fossil fuels, proponents have said.
But some residents who live nearby worry they will experience adverse health effects from the turbines similar to those Falmouth residents near that town’s 1.65-megawatt turbine have reported, including noise complaints.
In October, the board of selectmen voted, with two abstentions, to oppose the project due to possible health issues and property value decreases.
