Watching ‘Windfall’

A couple hundred people attended a showing of the documentary “Windfall” Sunday afternoon at Peterson Auditorium.
The documentary focused on the residents of Meredith, New York, an upstate farming community, and their journey to make decisions on industrial wind turbines in their area.
“Windfall” focuses on the residents of Meredith as they debate the pros and cons of allowing the turbines.
A group of residents who have been pushing for more stringent guidelines for wind turbines in Mason County organized the showing of the film.
Consumers Energy has proposed a wind farm in Riverton and Summit townships that calls for 56 476-foot turbines to be installed.
Several people said Sunday they saw similarities to Mason County community members in the people interviewed in the film.
District 2 County Commissioner Susan Boes was one of those in attendance Sunday.
“I thought the movie was very well done,” she said. “Those people were just like us.”
“I wanted to see both sides of the issue,” Boes said.
Boes also attended a meeting Thursday night by Mason County Neighbors for Lake Winds, who want the wind farm, and said she’s done a lot of research on the topic.
After the showing of the movie there was a question and answer session with director, producer and editor Laura Israel and co-producer and editor Stacy Foster via a video conference chat over the Internet.
