Plans for power transmission route OK’d

Credit:  Argus Leader, www.argusleader.com 8 February 2011 ~~

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has approved the final section of a transmission route that would ferry wind power from South Dakota to the Twin Cities.

The 250-mile transmission line from Brookings County to Hampton, Minn., just south of St. Paul, had been permitted except for a 60-mile stretch where it would cross the Minnesota River.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had raised concerns about how the transmission line might affect eagles flying along the river corridor. The FWS since has withdrawn its letter of concern, a Minnesota PUC spokesman said.

The Brookings line is one of four new transmission lines proposed by CapX2020, a group of 11 utility companies working to upgrade the regional grid infrastructure at a cost of $1.7 billion. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission approved the 10.6-mile section in South Dakota last month.
