Blowing in the wind

SOMERSET – Town officials have announced that the promise of wind power is officially in the air. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has agreed to give Somerset a $40,000 grant to study whether a wind turbine would be feasible in town. The town will have to contribute $5,000 to the effort. Specifically, the money would be used to erect a wind gauge to assess wind speeds for at least six months, and probably as long as one year. The next step will be to determine where the gauge will go. One suggested location is atop the water tower at Read Street and Brayton Point Road. Another is near North Elementary School close to the water treatment plant. Bruce Aldrich, who is coordinating the wind turbine project, said he wants to find a spot for the device as quickly as possible because a lot of communities have realized the value of wind power in this era of skyrocketing energy prices.
