Firm to appeal on mast ruling

South Staffordshire Water bosses are to appeal a decision not to allow a 60-metre high wind monitoring mast to be installed next to a Shropshire reservoir.

The proposal for the 200ft mast at Chelmarsh reservoir, near Bridgnorth, was thought to signal the first step in a plan to build one or more wind turbines at the site.

At a Bridgnorth District Council development control committee meeting last week, councillors threw out the proposals claiming it would be a “monstrosity” in the countryside. But now South Staffs Water has announced it will appeal the decision.

Mike Turrell, of South Staffs Water, said: “I can confirm we are in the process of appealing. It was refused on grounds of visual impact but we believe there are bigger masts in the area and it would only be there for a short period of time.

“We have not yet submitted our appeal but we will be shortly. We will not be changing anything about our application.”

South Staffs Water want to install the mast to monitor wind speeds and assess whether the site would be suitable for wind turbines.

Clerk to Chelmarsh Parish Council, Elizabeth Yeomans, said the parish council were pleased when the application was refused.

She said: “The parish council felt that the district council made the right decision and hoped the decision would be accepted as it was felt the Severn Valley was the wrong place for it. They are likely to be very disappointed to hear about the appeal.”
