Arcadia Township looks at potential issues, proposed wind farm project

Duke Energy wants to build a wind farm with more than 100 wind turbines, stretching across 15,000 acres.
The proposed project would put wind turbines in Arcadia and Pleasanton townships in Manistee County, and Joyfield and Blaine townships in Benzie County.
But before anything can begin, they have to work with the zoning ordinances in those townships.
Arcadia Township is thinking about a moratorium, meaning everything would be put on hold while they figure out their wind zoning ordinance.
Nothing is decided yet; the township is still working with the attorney and gathering information.
Many people living in Arcadia said they would support a moratorium, and that the township needs more time to make a decision.
“I do think our board needs time to consider what we’re going to do next and what’s right for our township and if that means a moratorium, I support that, absolutely,” said Arcadia resident Erynn Carter.
Some have concerns about the wind farm, including noise and light flicker issues.
On the other hand, the project would create hundreds of jobs.
Some say that and a way to create clean energy are too important to pass up.
“We have too much dependence on petroleum products right now, foreign countries are driving our economy,” said Arcadia resident Gary Mick.
