Chicken in every pot, windmill on every hill

In his determination to close Vermont Yankee, Governor-elect Shumlin made his new plans for the future of our Green Mountains clear. In eight weeks Shumlin’s administration will designate four regions in Vermont to be aggressively developed for large scale industrial wind projects.

What a change from Governor Douglas.

In Sheffield, our community has already experienced the costs of this unpopular debate. Our village has been crippled by division, falling real estate values, lack of permanent employment, blasting and bulldozing, and when the project is fully developed, most likely, our health.

The Shumlin administration is showing a lack of foresight and traditional Vermont values. Values that have protected these ridgelines for more than a century. The cost of this plan is great– the costs to Vermonters’ health, future renewable choices, and future business development are immeasurable.

Vermonters are the conscience of this great state. We are deeply and justifiably attached to our surrounding landscape. This landscape gives us a sense of time – something more permanent than we ourselves are something that was not created by us and must be protected. Let us hope the new Legislature will show more restraint and foresight than the incoming governor has. Take the time to evaluate what this will cost our state in the long run.

There are much better ways to create a renewable future
