Marple wind farm plan is thrown out

Marple’s first ‘wind farm’ remains a dot on the horizon after being refused permission by council bosses.

An application was made to the Marple area committee on Wednesday night to build a wind turbine at Cow Hey Farm on Glossop Road, Marple Bridge.

The owner said the 20.5-metre high structure would produce enough sustainable energy to supply electricity to the farm and the two neighbouring properties.

The council received 32 letters of objection to the scheme raising concerns about the visual impact, threat to wildlife, and noise pollution. It also received 16 letters of support, as well as a petition in support with over 80 signatures submitted by Stockport Friends of the Earth.

But it was recommended the application be refused on the grounds that it is in the green belt, and the applicant had not demonstrated any special circumstances that should allow it to go ahead.

Planning officer Adrian Harding also stated that the applicant failed to provide evidence to back up the statements about the amount of energy that would be produced, and the bat survey carried out was insufficient.

Councillor Martin Candler said: “The report does not suggest that we are against the development of sustainable energy sources. “But due to planning law we don’t have any room for manoeuvre if the application is not made in the correct way.”
