Prospect backs moratorium on wind farms

PROSPECT – The Town Council on Tuesday endorsed a resolution that calls for state legislators to immediately submit legislation to place a moratorium on wind energy projects until state minimum standards are created.

The council voted 9-0 to approve a draft resolution written by a four-member subcommittee. The subcommittee crafted that resolution Saturday, and finished it for recommendation Tuesday before the council meeting.

The vote came after more than two hours of public comment for and against BNE Energy Inc.’s proposal to erect two wind turbines at 178 New Haven Road. Several residents lodged concerns about noise, real estate values, wildlife, emergency response and other quality of life issues, while others urged more projects like these into town to alleviate the tax burden and promote renewable energy.

The draft resolution overall stayed the same, with a few additions and tweaks in language by the subcommittee. It recommends the Town Council to support renewable energy projects, acknowledge its responsibility to safeguard residents’ health, welfare, quality of life, safety and economic stability and support town land use and local health boards in establishing regulations for these projects.
