COLEBROOK – Neighbors of two proposed wind farms on Rock Hall Road and Flagg Hill Road have formed a nonprofit group that seeks a moratorium on wind turbines in residential areas statewide.
Members of the group, called Fairwindct Inc., were expected to appear before the Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday night at Town Hall. Joyce Hemingson, president of the group, said she was going to ask to have its proposal heard at the commission’s next meeting in January. The outcome of the meeting was not available late Monday.
Hemingson and members Stella and Michael Somers said they are not anti-wind or anti-green energy; they just don’t think the six proposed 328-foot high turbines should be installed in residential areas. They said they are approaching officials at the local and state levels about the moratorium idea. They said regulations need to be put into place that will protect homeowners’ property values and residents’ safety.
The wind farm proposals are coming from West Hartford-based BNE Energy Inc., which wants to build the turbines on large, undeveloped forest land – three on Rock Hall Road and three more on nearby Flagg Hill Road.
