While supporters of green power would seemingly prefer a rush to judgment on wind power, it is refreshing to see the Assembly of Delegates has taken a common-sense approach to wind power proposals for the Cape mainland area.
Recognizing that wind turbines bear little resemblance to windmills of the past, and are more akin to smokestacks, with addition of noise and flicker, the Assembly is asking for a temporary hold on proposals for windstack development until thorough study of noise and other impacts can be completed. Following the completion of such a study, communities could then adopt thoughtfully considered zoning regulations to avoid conflict with and negative impact on nearby residential or recreational property uses.
The “energy crisis” began in the early 1970s. Action has been delayed too long, I’m sure we would all agree. But planning and thoughtful consideration of the best locations for development of alternative energy production facilities should not be cast aside especially when public health issues are in question.
Let’s not create Love Canal problems in a rush to “go green.”
