Must be mindful of the creatures who make Great Hill area their sanctuary

Credit:  Wicked Local Marion, www.wickedlocal.com 24 November 2010 ~~

The endangered Roseate tern is a local and national treasure, with approximately 50 percent of the U.S. population on Ram and Bird islands. Considerable grant monies and volunteer efforts have gone into the study, protection and management of these birds.

As the Town of Marion goes forward with the Great Hill wind turbine study, it’s hard to imagine a more fragile constituent than the Roseate tern. Equally deserving of risk assessment are the ospreys inhabiting the area of the proposed turbine.

It’s important to be mindful of the creatures who make the Great Hill area their sanctuary.
