Massachusetts awards $1m to boost community wind efforts

More than $1 million has been awarded to eight community groups in Massachusetts investigating the feasibility of community wind power projects.
The funds were awarded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center as part of the Commonwealth Wind Community Scale Wind Initiative.
If all proposals are taken forward, the eight projects would lead to between 11.7 megawatts and 22.15MW of generating capacity installed.
Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles, who serves as chairman of MassCEC’s board of directors, said: “These grants will help communities and public and private entities across the Commonwealth reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, cut their emissions, and contribute toward Governor Patrick’s goal of 2,000 megawatts of wind power by 2020.”
Grants
Grants will support six feasibility studies for projects in Westport, Gloucester, Petersham, Blandford, Amesbury, and an as-yet undecided site.
Two grants will support design and construction projects in Plymouth and Cohasset.
The feasibility studies include one that could see up to six wind turbines, offering up to 10MW of generating capacity combined, for a site in either Blandford, Russell, Tolland or Granville. The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is working with Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc., on the study.
The design and construction projects include a 1.65MW or 3.3MW project at the Plymouth Waste Water Treatment Plant, being developed as a joint venture between Solaya and Palmer Capital of Wilmington.
