Wind turbines may be coming to Garfield County

ENID – For the last couple of years, workers for TradeWind Energy have been collecting meteorological data and doing field surveys in the hopes of turning land in the northeast part of Garfield County into a full-fledged wind farm.

The Chisholm View Wind Project, located in the Hunter and Kremlin area, covers 40,000 acres of leased land. TradeWind Energy, a company out of Lenexa, Kan., which has leased that land, may someday soon build wind turbines there to generate electricity.

Joe Arb, Chisholm View Wind Project development manager for TradeWind, said the next step in the process and their ultimate goal is to find a buyer for the electricity that would be generated from the project.

“Once we find a buyer and can form a long-term agreement with the buyer, we’ll be able to start construction,” Arb said.

TradeWind Energy actually is one of two companies that have leased land in Garfield County and Grant County for potential wind-driven electricity production. RES Americas, headquarted in Broomfield, Colo., also has leased land from landowners.

In the TradeWind Energy project, Arb said the company has leased land from more than 100 landowners in the Kremlin and Hunter areas.

TradeWind Energy was one of several companies that attended this year’s Wind Energy Forum, hosted by Enid Regional Development Alliance.

At the forum, which was held in September, Arb explained what a wind farm potentially could look like several years down the road and what level of impact it could have on Enid.

Brent Kisling, executive director of Enid Regional Development Alliance, said the forum was successful because companies like TradeWind can tell residents specifically what is going on and what efforts are being made to bring clean energy to the state of Oklahoma.

“There’s lots of interest in this area of the country right now,” Kisling said, regarding wind energy development.

Arb was complimentary about Enid Regional Development Alliance’s involvement, saying communication between the two entities during the project has been successful.

“The development alliance has facilitated wind energy education for local communities and has acted as a hub for TradeWind and other (companies) to communicate messages,” Arb said.

Arb said he and TradeWind have been excited to be a part of the Garfield County community, and are looking forward to the impact their business will have on the community.

“We feel our Chisholm View Wind Project is one of the most promising projects in our portfolio,” he said. “In regards to northwestern Oklahoma as a whole, the wind resource is almost without limits.”
