Wind turbine opponents blast government, industry

PICTON – Opponents of wind turbines are gathering here this weekend to sound the collective alarm about health concerns.
The Society for Wind Vigilance is presenting a symposium at the Waring House. The gathering is called Global Wind Industry and Adverse Health Effects: Loss of Social Justice? It began Friday and ends Sunday.
Organizer Beth Harrington said Saturday at the event about 110 people – roughly 30 per cent of them local – were registered.
She said the international guest speakers include authorities in medicine, physics and more.
“This is a multidisciplinary research group,” Harrington said. “They all basically have come to the same conclusion.
“There are adverse effects from industrial turbines, from audible noise to low-frequency noise, which are not acknowledged by the wind industry,” she said.
Dr. Nina Pierpont, the event’s keynote speaker, said there are “significant” negative health impacts caused by turbines.
She said governments, including Ontario’s, are ignoring those reported risks. She is pushing for turbines to be placed 1.5 to two kilometres from homes, but said governments and turbine companies aren’t listening.
“None of them are willing to talk about setbacks that are really enough.”
