Neighbors unhappy with windmill site, impacts

The installation of a 120-foot tall wind turbine at Nantucket High School was greeted with fanfare last week, but as the blades began to spin this week, some neighbors and others in the community raised concerns about its location and what they called a rushed review process, including a failure to notify abutting property owners about the project.
Some Surfside Road residents across the street from the high school believed that the turbine was going to be erected behind the football field, toward Sparks Avenue, and were surprised when the foundation was poured closer to their homes. They were never officially notified by the high school, nor the Historic District Commission or any other town regulatory agency, about the project and its location.
Others in the area are concerned about the impact of noise from the turbine, while the father of one high-school student called the siting of the project so close to the school and athletic fields “reckless and irresponsible.”
For Irean Schreiber, a Surfside Road resident, news of the project didn’t come in the form of a letter and she hadn’t read the newspaper reports about the plan to erect the turbine. Schreiber discovered what was happening only after taking her dog for a walk and seeing the hole for the foundation several weeks ago.
“The abutters were not notified at all, and we heard nothing,” Schreiber said.
