Governor ‘perplexed’ by wind energy recommendation

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ― Gov. Dave Freudenthal says he’s perplexed by a recent state task force recommendation to strip some wind energy companies of the right to seize private land for power lines.

The state’s Wind Energy Task Force last week voted to recommend that the state Legislature strip the power of eminent domain from private companies building collector lines for wind projects in the state.

Eminent domain means the power to take private property for public use, and is used by railroads, pipelines and other private projects.

Freudenthal says he might favor limiting wind energy developers to using eminent domain to secure only the last few parcels of private property needed for a project as long as they had negotiated with landowners for most of what they needed.
