Wind turbine noise report

Vinalhaven – Debate over wind turbine noise is being heard on Vinalhaven once again. This time it’s being called a victory for the folks complaining the turbines are too loud.

The Fox Island Wind Neighbors, a group who thinks the turbines are too noisy, say a recent report released by a sound consultant brought in by The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has raised questions about the noise the turbines produce, particularly at night.

D.E.P. regulations say the noise cannot exceed 45-decibels at night on the site where the turbines are located.

The Fox Island Wind Group disagrees with the findings. In a statement, they say they’ve found a discrepancy in the sound data that’s been collected.

The group says they have an issue with how the ambient sounds of the island are being factored into the overall noise measurements.

They want to have more talks with D.E.P. on the issue.
