Press release — No to Golden Wind Farm

SUBJECT: Village of Golden receives citizen petition, acts to prevent wind development in 1.5 mile zone around city

A group of Golden residents presented a petition against allowing wind development within 1.5 miles of Golden’s city limits to the Golden Village Board at their Wednesday evening (September 8th) meeting. The petition contained 210 signatures of adults who live in the city of Golden, a town of about 500 including children.

One of the petition gatherers, Karen Loeschen of Golden, told the board that the number of signatures represented the overwhelming majority of adults who live in that town, and that there were very few people her group encountered who refused to sign it. In her speech Loeschen said, “Even though Wind energy is “green energy”, there is a ‘pollution fallout’ to a wind farm. Pollution is not limited to something that can be inhaled, smelled or tasted. Pollution can be heard from resulting noise, pollution can be felt through low frequency vibrations and other health hazards, it can be felt in the pocket book through decreased property values, and it can be felt in quality of life and community relationships.”

Another Golden resident, Robin Walker, asked, “Why didn’t the Adams Co. Board at a minimum not send a board member to each town to just inform them of the project? If each town had been informed by the Board or the wind turbine company then questions and concerns could have been properly and timely addressed.” She also said, “People have a right to do what they want on their land however other property owners have the right to be informed and given an opportunity to question, voice concerns and to protect their own property and way of life. That is all I am asking–the opportunity to be heard and to ask my community representatives to enact a protective buffer zone in order to retain the quality of life and the landscape of our community.”

None of the citizens present spoke in favor of the development.

Loeschen also asked any Golden Town Board trustees to reveal to the public if they had any conflicts of interest and if so, to abstain from voting on the issue. One board member said he had a conflict of interest, and would abstain from voting on the issue.

Noting the clear mandate from the citizens of Golden, the Village of Golden Board of Trustees passed a motion that stated that it is in the best interest of the Village of Golden and its residents to implement the provisions of Illinois State Law 65 ILCS 5/11-13-26 and proceed immediately to prohibit the construction of the wind turbines (as specified by the Adams County Wind Ordinance) within the 1.5 mile radius surrounding the Village of Golden’s municipal limits and to take all reasonable steps to insure that the Village is acting in a manner consistent with the Law.

Additionally the Golden Village Board agreed to have representatives from the Village Board approach the Adams County Board at the next regularly scheduled meeting, inform them of the Golden Village Board’s position, and request that the Adams County Board prohibit the permitting of any wind turbines within the 1 1/2 mile area around the municipal limits of the Village of Golden.

The petition signed by 210 citizens of Golden and the action by the Golden Village Board of Trustees came only one day after the Clayton Town Board received a petition at their regular monthly meeting containing 196 signatures of Clayton residents requesting that wind turbines not be placed within 1.5 miles of Clayton. According to a preliminary map shown in Acciona’s presentation at the Adams County public hearing, the proposed Prairie Mills Wind Farm would include land leased within 1.5 miles of the city limits of both Clayton and Golden.
