Winds of change for Shuniah

The sight of wind-powered turbines could soon be a common one in the Township of Shuniah. A Toronto-based company has recieved approval to produce as many as 10 megawatts of green energy in Shuniah.

Township CAO Eric Collingwood, says that the wind power company Ventus Energy Incorporated will have to erect 4 or 5 turbines to meet the 10 megawatt threshold. Each year the company can apply to have that threshold bumped up by another 10 megawatts. The company has optioned thousands of acres of municipal, private, and crown lands for the project. If all 10 megawatts of power are produced on either private or town-owned land, it will mean a huge increase in assessment for the small township which will see tax revenues increase by approximately $200,000.

Collingwood says the increase in revenue is most welcome, as over the past year Shuniah lost a significant portion of their tax base with the closure of the compressor station and the reassessment of Abitibi’s properties.

It’s expected that it will be at least a year before the first windmill appears on Shuniah Township’s horizon.
