Turbine planned on soldier graves

British Legion boss is urging town residents to fight proposals to build a wind farm on ground where Uttoxeter’s brave World War One soldiers are buried.

An officer and 14 other soldiers from Uttoxeter, who fought in the 137th Staffordshire Brigade, died in the Battle of Loos in 1915.

Many of those who died from the brigade, part of the 46th North Midland Division, have no known grave and still lie in the French fields where the battle took place.

Developers Innovent have launched proposals to build ten wind turbines, each twice the height of Big Ben, on the battle field.

Uttoxeter Royal British Legion chairman Geoff Morrison has labelled the proposals ‘inappropriate’ and will add his name to a petition fighting the plans.

He said: “I’m surprised as the French suffered just as much as us in the war and I’m sure they respect the fallen just as we do.

“It’s shocking that developers want to build a wind farm on such a special area.

“I’ll be adding my name to the petition and will be urging my colleagues at the British Legion to do the same.

“We’ve done the tour of the battlefields in France and Belgium and every 200 yards you hit a cemetery of one type or another.

“I think it’s totally inappropriate really. Whether or not you approve of wind turbines is irrelevant.

“You see a lot of large structures on these sites but they tend to be massive memorials to the brave soldiers who fell.

“Just look at the names on the war memorial in Market Place and you’ll see that a lot of Uttoxeter troops died on this battlefield.”

The British attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt commenced at around 2pm on October 13, 1915.

They were brought to a standstill by German artillery and machine guns by 2.30pm.

The petition is available online at www.mesopinions.com/petition/nature-environnement/projet-centrale-eolienne-entre-auchy-mines.
