With enough signatures turned into the city, Piedmont’s city council voted to call for a recall election in Ward 2, setting the stage for the second recall election to be held in Piedmont in a little more than a year.
Councilman Vernon Woods, who made the motion to call for the election against himself at Monday’s meeting, will face an election on Aug. 13.
“We got no choice,” Woods said, as he and the rest of the council voted to approve the election.
A local organization that has been vocal in its opposition to a proposed wind farm initiated the recall effort and said Woods had met with officials from a wind energy company in an attempt to open the door to wind turbine construction inside Piedmont city limits.
Woods said he met with officials from Apex Wind Energy in order to see what options existed for moving the construction of wind turbines further away from more populated parts of town.
Two other recall efforts were made in Piedmont over the past two years. A recall against former councilman Hoss Cooley was thrown out by a county judge in 2011 and another recall effort against former councilman Wade Johnson removed him from office in 2012.
