Large W. Va. wind farm faces opposition

Opponents of a 200 turbine at Mount Storm, W.Va., will have their case heard by the state Supreme Court in April.
The project was approved by the West Virginia Public Service Commission and a circuit court judge turned down a previous appeal by opponents to reverse the WVPSC decision, the Cumberland Times-News reported.
NedPower, a Dutch company, received permits and has begun land clearing and early construction.
“You’ll see an increase in activity come spring and by late spring the turbine parts will begin to come to be erected during the summer,” said Tim O’Leary, spokesman for the project.
Two other projects in the area are also in the works. NedPower has projects in India, Germany and Ireland as well. Clipper Windpower Development and Synergics also have proposed wind projects in the area.
While the projects are moving along, a bill was recently passed in the West Virginia legislature calling for in-depth study of wind power. Pending the results of the study a six month moratorium may be put on new projects.
David Friend, a marketing and sales representative with U.S. WindForce, said he’s not worried about the study and doesn’t believe the bill will have any significant impact on his company’s projects.
