Kincardine asks for Armow project to be stalled, comment period re-opened

Kincardine is calling on the province to halt the process for the Armow Wind Project in light of new information.

Council passed a motion at its meeting last Wednesday objecting to the closure of the public comment period for the proposed wind energy development after learning that NAV CANADA identified 43 out of the 99 turbine placements in the project layout that would impact the municipal airport. A consultant for the projects developers, Pattern Renewable Holdings and Samsung Renewable Energy, has proposed solutions he says will eliminate the impact, but they will require changes to flight approaches and departure procedures and changes to airport infrastructure.

The motion makes reference to a letter sent from the Municipality’s solicitor to the province on April 4, indicating that the Municipality would like to conduct its own independent review of the new information. It also referenced a letter sent to province April 12 from the Municipality asking that the project be suspended until council and municipal staff have a full understanding of the implications of NAV CANADA’s findings and until the Municipality is aware of how the developers intend to deal with them. To date, the Municipality has not received a response back from the province.

“I think it’s a productive and positive move,” councillor Jacqueline Faubert said of the motion.

The motion will be circulated to Premier Kathleen Wynne, the Minister of Environment, manager of Renewable Energy Approvals, Minister of Energy, Minister of Rural Affairs, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and Pattern and Samsung.
