A Lune Valley Lord and hereditary chief of a Scottish clan who campaigned against the construction of wind turbines in the Lancaster district has died, aged 75.

Hugh William Reay, The 14th Lord Reay, who lived at Whittington Hall near the village of Whittington, died on May 10 following an illness.

He was the hereditary chief of the Scottish Clan Mackay and an elected member of the House of Lords; and he held a barony, and an estate, in the Netherlands. Lord Reay was responsible for attempting to bring the Wind Turbines (Minimum Distances from Residential Properties) Bill to Parliament, but it was turned down.

His funeral service is due to take place at St Michael’s Church in Whittington on Thursday, May 23, at 2pm. A memorial service will be held in London in the autumn.

See next week’s Lancaster Guardian for a full tribute.
