Huntington sets meeting on windmill moratorium

Before Canon, the popular photography brand with a company headquarters in Melville, can receive approval from the Town of Huntington to erect 11 wind turbines, town officials plan to craft regulations regarding zoning, height, safety, noise and location requirements. The Town Board will be holding a public hearing on Feb. 5 to discuss a 90-day moratorium on issuing turbine permits in order to give the Town enough time to consider revisions to the Town Code to allow wind turbines.
The town currently has no zoning regulations for wind turbines, and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who called for the hearing, favors following a procedure similar to what the town did in 2011 when major revisions were made to town zoning laws in order to construct cellphone towers.

In consideration of the rapid growth and development within the wind turbine industry, the Board will be considering whether any procedures specific to the construction and maintenance of turbines should be included in the Town Code.

Speaking to Newsday, Cuthbertson acknowledged that there is a broad range of legislation pertaining to windmills, and the Board needs adequate time to review these laws and consider new ones before any applications are granted within the town.

Canon has yet to submit photographs of the proposed project, nor noise and aesthetic studies which were requested by the zoning board when the company made its initial request for building permits.

The public meeting will be held on February 5, at 7 p.m. at Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main Street.
