Derbyshire County Council has expressed its ‘disappointment’ at the short-lived performance of a wind turbine at Shipley Country Park which had to be switched off.
The 15kw turbine was put up in October 2008 at a cost of £45,000 and was expected to generate around 20 per cent of the power used by the visitor centre.
But it was turned off in September 2011 after it broke down.
A spokesperson for DDC said: “We’re really disappointed the wind turbine at Shipley Country Park is not working. As a precautionary measure – following concerns over similar turbines elsewhere in the country – we turned it off.
“Unfortunately the company which supplied it no longer exists but we are looking at the possibility of bringing the wind turbine back into use.
“We’re also looking at other environmentally-friendly ways of generating clean energy in the park such as using solar panels.”
DDC recently approved a bid to have solar panels installed on the roof of the visitor centre, with cash from a £200,000 fund aimed at reducing the carbon impact of four of Derbyshire’s corporate buildings. A digital display will show visitors how much the attraction is reducing its carbon footprint by.
