Councillors defer decision on substation for Trump-row wind farm

A decision on controversial plans that could see a substation built at an Aberdeenshire settlement has been further deferred.
The facility at Blackdog, north of Aberdeen, would service a wind farm which is planned for Aberdeen Bay and has been heavily opposed by US entrepreneur Donald Trump. He says the turbines would ruin views from his golf course at Menie.
At a meeting of Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine area committee on Tuesday, councillors decided to defer their decision to allow an environmental impact assessment to be carried out and for the land where the facility is proposed for to be investigated.
It has been claimed by locals that the proposed site was formerly dumping ground for substances including asbestos.
Council planners have already given their backing to the proposals and had recommended in a report to the committee that members support them.
The facility would include two electricity substation buildings on land south of Hareburn Terrace.
It is the second time councillors have deferred making a decision on the application. On March 26 councillors said they wanted to visit the site and hold a public hearing prior to taking a decision.
The local authority has received 62 letters of objection to the proposals. They raise concerns including possible noise from the substation, the impact on local dunes, the impact on wildlife and that the land is “contaminated”.
