Widow of TV star Tom Weir hits out at Scottish Government over windfarms

Rhona, whose husband Tom presented long running series Weir’s Way, handed over a petition to Alex Salmond on behalf of anti-windfarm campaigners.
Tom Weir would have hated Scotland’s windfarms, the hillwalker’s widow said yesterday.
Rhona Weir, 94, hit out after handing over a 4500-signature petition to First Minister Alex Salmond at his Bute House residence yesterday.
People from 45 countries opposed the Government-backed rise of wind turbines as a blight on the landscape.
Rhona – whose husband Tom died in 2006 after finding fame on STV’s Weir’s Way – said: “He would have disliked them intensely.”
The showdown came as Rhona backed the Stop Highland Windfarms Campaign.
She said: “I don’t think we got far but Mr Salmond got the petition and we got our point of view over. Tourism is one of our biggest assets and tourists don’t want to come here to see windfarms everywhere.
“They come to see Scotland because our scenery is unique and beautiful. It is important we keep the country as clear as possible of windfarms.”
Salmond said: “I was delighted to meet Rhona Weir and hear her thoughts.
“There is a legitimate debate about where the most appropriate sites for renewable energy in the country are.
“And it is clear from recent opinion polling there is wide public support for green energy, including wind power.”
