Strong opposition to 77m turbine in north Norfolk at extraordinary meeting

Concerned villagers turned out in force to a public debate to oppose a controversial wind turbine proposal last night.
More than 50 homeowners from Oulton, Heydon and even Itteringham attended the Oulton Parish Council extraordinary meeting at Oulton Congregational Chapel.
Bernard Matthews Wind Energy Co-operative have submitted a plan to Broadland District Council to build a 77m-high turbine on Oulton Airfield.
Chris Lambert, from Oulton, said: “I hate the word nimby. I am not a nimby. We are doing our bit in Norfolk for renewable energy but there is a right and a wrong place to put wind turbines.”
He added Oulton Airfield was the wrong place.
A woman from Oulton said she was concerned about the turbines spreading emmisions from the Bernard Matthews turkey sheds, which are close to the proposed site, and could cause health problems.
Other concerns included the impact of the turbine on the “beautiful” surroundings; the proximity of the structure to family homes; and the impact on wildlife and nearby Blickling Hall.
At the end of the meeting 55 residents voted against the plan and one person abstained.
The four parish councillors voted to object and would be sending in the council’s response to Broadland, which will be meeting with the applicant this Thursday.
A representative to Bernard Matthews did not attend despite being invited.
The Ministry of Defence and National Trust have objected.
