Industrial turbine fire under investigation

An early morning fire at an industrial wind turbine off Golf Course Road Tuesday, April 2, is currently under investigation by Capital Power.

At around 1 a.m. April 2, the fire department responded to a turbine on fire at Golf Course Road near Loyal Line. The turbine was isolated from the power circuit after the blaze was reported.

The root cause is under investigation, however the fire had burned itself out by 3 a.m. according to Dan Hayden of Capital Power.

The turbine blades and nacelle (the square box off the blade that houses the generator) were severely damaged in the fire, which was an isolated incident. The turbine is part of the Kingsbridge 1 project occupying much of the Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh landscape.

“The turbine manufacturers sending a team of investigators to determine the root analysis,” said Lori Wilson of Capital Power. “Obviously we are in the preliminary stages.”

Hayden said the fire is extremely rare – the incident is the first of its kind in Ontario.

However, priorities are to ensure employee and public the safety, make sure the damage is contained to the turbine site.

Landowners have been notified, Wilson said. She said the investigation will better determine how much and what needs to be replaced on the turbine and full costs of the damage will be determined as the process unfolds.
