Council to decide on sharing wind farm housing stance

The Pyrenees council will decide tonight whether to tell the state’s planning department about its approach to housing development around wind farms.

The council asks landholders who want to build houses within two kilometres of existing or approved wind turbines to have acoustic testing done at the site.

A shire officers’ report says the approach could be taken up by other councils if it is submitted to the Department of Planning and Community Development.

Pyrenees Mayor Michael O’Connor says landholders should get an understanding of turbine noise before they build.

“What our concern is is that if somebody wants to build on a piece of property that’s in the 2k buffer zone is they should have every opportunity to have an idea to determine what are likely noise levels going to be at their new residence,” he said.
