Traffic at the motorway junction in Hellaby spent an hour “in chaos” after a bus collided with a lorry carrying wind turbine blades.

Commuters at junction 1 of the M18 were brought to a standstill after the crash, which jammed the roundabout at where the A631 meets the motorway.

Eyewitnesses told the Advertiser that the blade appeared to have been damaged. One said: “The junction is in chaos – it’s a real mess over here. There’s dozens of police on the scene.”

A police spokeswoman said that a bus crashed into the back of the lorry and its abnormal load, which was being escorted from Sheffield by poice at around 3.30pm.

The obstruction had been cleared and traffic flow returnedto normal by 4.30pm, she added.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman confirmed that the collision caused traffic to back up some way along the M18.
