Dominican hoteliers demand relocating wind park

The National Hotels and Restaurants Association (ASONAHORES) demanded the respect of the territorial zoning in the tourism regions and suggested looking for another location for the wind energy park whose construction was begun in an area declared a hotel development zone in Punta Cana.
The organization feels that the “respect of the tourism territorial zoning is fundamental to assure the development and maintain the country as an attractive investment destination.”
It feels that the Presidential Decree which approves the project is very accurate, but conditioning it to the respect of tourism and environmental regulations, and that the park’s promoters are not authorized to use the 60 meter marine strip.
“ASONAHORES shares the Tourism Ministry’s criterion that rejects the construction of the wind park in a zone reserved for tourism development created according to the law, and in which multimillionaire projects have begun, in the understanding that a ground use exists approved by the State, that guarantees the investments made,” the hoteliers state.
The feels that the potential benefits justifying this construction do not compensate the institutional damage that would cause the change of the zoning, to allow a project of an industrial character in an area classified as a “hotel zone” in Polygon 5 of the Punta Cana-El Macao Tourism Development region, the country’s and the Caribbean’s largest.
ASONAHORES adds that the respect to the territorial zoning is vital, and the fact that Law 305 categorically establishes that the use of the marine strip can only be authorized for tourism activities or works of public interest, and in this case it’s a private power company.
