Mid Wales turbine protesters launch appeal for funds

Campaigners battling against plans for windfarms in Mid Wales have launched a fundraising appeal.

Members of the Mongomeryshire Against Pylons (MAP) group said the money raised would help pay for expert witnesses to attend a public inquiry in the summer into the building of windfarms in the region.

The inquiry into proposed wind farms at Llanbadarn Fynydd, Llaithddu, Llandinam, Llanbrynmair and Carnedd Wen in Mid Wales will take place in June. Members of MAP said the outcome would be key to whether pylons were built through the Mid Wales and Shropshire countryside to take the power generated from the turbines to the national electricity network.

MAP chairman Jonathon Wilkinson said: “We are encouraging local people and our supporters to donate to the fund and we are also asking businesses which will be affected by these plans to get involved.

“We are meeting local business people in February to explain to them how this will affect them and how it will affect tourism.

“The money raised will go towards getting expert witnesses to speak on our behalf at the public inquiry on what impact these turbines will have on the area and its tourism. We will need to raise a lot of money.”

Mr Wilkinson said the group’s funds had already been boosted through the sale of fundraising calendars. He added that an update on the battle against windfarms and pylons would be given at a public meeting at Bwlch-y-Cibau Village Hall tomorrow at 7pm.

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies has been invited to speak.

Anyone who wishes to donate to MAP’s appeal can do so through the group’s website or by contacting Mr Wilkinson directly on 07966 630870.
