Turbine battle lines are drawn

The battle lines are being drawn up for and against a Calderdale windfarm.
Calderdale Friends of the Earth say they support the idea of putting five 410-ft high turbines on Todmorden Moor, subject to an environmental impact study.
Meanwhile, the Todmorden Moor Restoration Trust is to hold a public meeting on Friday to set up an official opposition group.
Coronation Power has put in a planning application for the turbines. They say they will help generate clean and sustainable energy and tackle the harmful effects of climate change.
Last year, a Government planning inspector refused to allow the firm to put a 60-metre wind gauge on the site because it might affect a nearby model flying club.
A spokesperson for Calderdale Friends of the Earth said the windfarm was just one component of a more important carbon-reduction plan for Calderdale.
“But we will also want to see evidence in the scheme’s environmental assessment, that its potential impacts have been properly assessed.”
Todmorden Moor Restoration Trust is worried the development will damage the moorland peat and its ability to retain water, increasing the risk of flooding.
The public meeting to discuss ways to oppose the scheme will be at 7.
30pm on Friday at the Fielden Centre, Ewood Lane, Todmorden.
