$60,000 damage to turbine parts in Haldimand

Credit:  January 20, 2013 | www.brantfordexpositor.ca ~~

Damage was pegged at $60,000 this weekend after wind turbine parts at a site in Haldimand County were vandalized.

The incident happened sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning at a location on Walpole Concession Road 7. Someone painted graffiti on parts of the giant turbine while setting other parts on fire.

The turbine components belong to NextEra Energy Canada, sponsor of the Summerhaven wind turbine project.

NextEra was in the news earlier this month after its contractor removed an eagle’s nest from a location near Fisherville that was slated for turbine development. This provoked an outcry from environmentalists and wind development opponents alike.

On Thursday, as many as 30 aboriginals as well as supporters from Haldimand Wind Concerns picketed wind turbine sites in south-west Haldimand belonging to both NextEra and Capital Power Corporation.
