Second Dearne Head Wind Farm plan sparks anger from High Flatts and Birdsedge neighbours

A plan to build a wind farm with four large turbines has sparked fury from villagers.

Pure Renewable Energy (PRE) has again submitted plans to build Dearne Head Wind Farm, comprising four 100m wind turbines, off Broadstone Road, near High Flatts.

In 2010, Nottingham based company PRE applied to build four 110m (360ft) turbines on the site, but the application was withdrawn following advice that the proposal would be refused.

The new plan, now submitted to Kirklees Council, has sparked strong objections from neighbours, some of whom live approximately 600m from the proposed 0.8-hectare site.

BOLT (Birdsedge and district Opposition to Large Turbines) says neighbours in Birdsedge and High Flatts will be affected by noise, and at times of low sun, shadow flicker from the turbines.

They claim the turbines will tower hundreds of feet over the village.

Birdsedge resident Jacey Bedford said: “Most of them are in the Barnsley authority, but we’re right on the border between Kirklees and Barnsley and enough is enough.

“The cumulative effect is getting ridiculous and there are at least three more turbines under planning consideration besides the Dearne Head ones.

“The effect of these industrial structures looming over the village will have a detrimental effect on our community.

“We’ve been fighting this application for the last two years. PRE’s first application was withdrawn after a Kirklees planning officer told them that it was unsuitable for several reasons, however the newly revised plan is almost the same with only a few minor changes.”

A public consultation on the Dearne Head Wind Farm plan ends on February 1.

And PRE isn’t the only party hoping to erect wind turbines in the area.

High Flatts resident Ian Pickford has applied to Kirklees Council to erect a 34m turbine on his farm, off Green Lane.

A public consultation on Mr Pickford’s plan ends on February 3.
