Selby: Success for campaign to halt wind farm

Campaigners are celebrating after plans for a new wind farm were refused after four years of objections.

Plans for the Bishopwood Wind Farm in Selby would have included seven turbines, each standing 125m tall, on land near Thorpe Willoughby and Hambleton.

But the application was rejected by Selby District Council’s planning committee at a meeting last week.

The reasons for the unsuccessful planning application were listed as lack of information supplied by the wind farm developers Prowind and noise concerns.

The turbines would have generated 17.5 megawatts, which is enough to provide electricity for as many as 10,500 homes.

Prowind first submitted a planning application for Bishopwood in 2009.

The unanimous decision by the council was announced on Wednesday.

Campaigners voiced concerns over the location of the turbines, with some houses being 575m away, meaning the wind farm would be visible from all main rooms in the property.

There were concerns over noise pollution, as the site is also near a golf course and caravan park.

According to the campaign website, more than 1,000 local people objected to the wind farm proposal.

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams supported the decision, saying: “I am pleased that Selby Council has refused the Bishopwood development, which would have produced little energy and blighted the lives of those living close by.”

He added: “Selby District planners have taken the right decision.

“I hope that the developers now appreciate the concern and the harm that such developments do to local communities.”
