Wind turbines taller than Big Ben approved at appeal for East Youlstone near Bude

Two 100 metre turbines can be erected on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty after planning permission was granted at appeal.

The Planning Inspectorate this week granted permission for the two turbines at East Youlstone, near Bude.

The turbines will be taller than Big Ben and will be 7km from Embury Beacon.

Torridge District Council refused the application in July last year but the developers behind the project Airvolution Energy Limited appealed the decision.

The planning inspector said in his report: “The National Planning Policy Framework indicates that great weight should be given to ‘conserving landscape and scenic beauty in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, given their highest status of protection in relation to landscape and scenic beauty.

“I have already found that the proposal would not conflict with those objectives to a material degree.”

The inspector has made the condition that the turbines are erected within the next three years.
