A plan for a 25-turbine wind farm on a site near Invergarry in Lochaber has been approved by the Scottish government.

RidgeWind Ltd’s Beinneun Wind Farm will generate enough electricity for 40,000 homes.

The government said the two-year construction phase will provide work for 90 people and bring £30m into the local economy.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland opposed the project.

Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said the planning consent came with planning conditions designed to protect natural habitats.

The completed scheme will provide employment for six people and a payment of £500,000 to local communities. Some of the money will be used for university and college scholarships.

Mr Ewing said the wind farm would provide a valuable boost to the local area.

He added: “In consenting this application I have put in place a series of conditions to protect natural habitats, local communities and local wildlife.

“This includes a research programme into common scoter breeding ecology which was suggested by the RSPB and will include scoter and mammal surveys, fish studies, and investigation of the loch profile.”
