Support for Arran Elderslie anti-turbine bylaw

Support for an Arran Elderslie resolution distributed among Ontario municipalities is growing.

The resolution, requesting a moratorium on the planning, development and construction of industrial wind turbines, continues to receive support from municipalities across the province, with the County of Essex, the Municipality of West Elgin and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula all supporting the call for a moratorium.

“While the council for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula supports the provincial government in its bid for renewable energy, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula must inform the Province of Ontario that is does not wish to have wind turbines located within our community,” a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty from clerk Angie Cathrae read.

Cathrae said council has received a number of petitions from residents requesting that the province make a decision that would not see wind turbine development within the Town of South Bruce Peninsula boundaries or on the Bruce Peninsula.
“The residents are concerned for their health, property values, effects on the environment and effects on taxation,” she wrote.
Arran Elderslie deputy mayor Mark Davis said he is “pleased” to see support for the moratorium and urged Arran Elderslie council to write a similar letter to that of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula specifically telling Premier McGuinty “we do not want turbines here.”
