Offshore windmills in New Jersey not worthy

A Sept. 12 letter by Laura Lynch (“Offshore wind power worth N.J. investment”), representing the New Jersey Sierra Club, continues the club’s effort to deceive the citizens of New Jersey on the subject of offshore windmill development.
Lynch writes about studies done by the “nonpartisan” Environmental Law Institute that says the U.S. government subsidized the fossil fuel industry to the tune of $72 billion from 2000-2008. What she doesn’t tell you is exactly what fossil fuel was subsidized.
The use of ethanol, a fossil fuel, as an additive in gasoline has been mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency with the assumption that it would help to reduce pollution. Since the cost to produce ethanol is three times the cost to make gasoline, producers of ethanol receive a subsidy.
They do this even though production of corn-based ethanol is an environmental nightmare which is also driving the cost of food ever higher. This subsidy was demanded by environmental groups like the Sierra Club.
Lynch uses the words “radioactive” and “earthquakes” in an attempt to scare the citizens into believing that the production of other forms of energy such as natural gas is somehow dangerous.
Construction of thousands of windmills off the shore of New Jersey will result in the massive deaths of migratory birds. Thousands of windmills will destroy the incredibly beautiful views that visitors to the shore have come to expect, wreaking havoc on the state’s tourist industry. And finally, the exodus of companies that cannot compete – because of ever-increasing electricity costs – will continue.
Simply put, New Jersey and windmills: Not perfect together.
