Radar fears convince government reporter to reject Largoward wind turbines plan

The door has been closed on a bid to build two 330ft turbines near Largoward in north-east Fife.
A Scottish Government reporter has concluded the Largoward Windmills, as they were to be known, would have risked public safety by interfering with air traffic control at RAF Leuchars.
He also cited the ”significant” visual impact for two houses within 1640 feet of the development.
Cupar man Gordon Pay wanted to install the turbines at South Cassingray Farm, a mile east of the village, lodging his plans with Fife Council over two years ago.
When the local authority refused planning permission, he appealed to the government.
Government reporter Lance Guilford said the turbines would be in line of sight of Leuchars air traffic control radar, nine miles away.
The Ministry of Defence, which objected to the scheme, said that turbines had been shown to desensitise radar so aircraft may not be detected and false aircraft returns created, resulting in ”significant operational impact”.
