North Lynn: Councillors back 100m turbine scheme

Plans for a 100 metre high wind turbine at North Lynn have won an MP’s support but sparked concern for some local residents.
KL Technologies Ltd in Estuary Road applied to West Norfolk Council for planning permission for the turbine to provide between 65 per cent and 100 per cent of its energy needs, resulting in significant financial savings.
Planning committee members, who approved the scheme on Monday, heard NW Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham had given the scheme his backing. He said: “I have visited KL Technologies and I believe this is an excellent example of a successful local business applying for a micro-generation project.”
An article about the application which appeared in the Lynn News last Friday led to several comments on our Facebook page, one highlighting the turbine’s closeness to houses and St Edmund’s Primary School.
A report to the committee said the site was on an industrial estate about a third of a mile from the nearest home and noise from the turbine should not result in a material loss of amenity.
Shadow flicker could cause annoyance but could be dealt with by imposing conditions on operating times, officers said.
No objections were received on drainage, heritage and conservation grounds. Natural England and RSPB concerns about the effect of the turbine on herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls required monitoring work to be carried out after it was built.
A report to the committee concluded: “National and local policy on renewable energy requires that the benefits of the proposal in reducing reliance on fossil fuels be weighed against the harm caused.
“On balance, detriment to the local landscape does not outweigh the positive environmental and economic gains.”
