Residents question ‘barely there’ Guisborough wind turbines vision

Residents have been given a glimpse of a developer’s vision for 410ft high wind turbines on hills overlooking Guisborough.
But even some of those in favour of the scheme have described the impression of the view of the turbines as “unfair.”
Residents and businessfolk were shown the first artists’ impressions by Durham-based Banks Renewables, who propose the six-turbine windfarm at Park Woods, on the Gisborough Estate.
Half of those we spoke to had already seen the full-sized photos at Banks’ public exhibition.
But all questioned the use of a wide angle format to show the potential impact on thousands of homes in and around Guisbrough.
They said this stretched the images, lowering the perceived height and size of the turbines – even though they are accurate and to scale.
Angry George Tinsley, 61, boss of the North Yorkshire Brewing Company at Pinchinthorpe, just outside Guisborough, said: “I’ve a clear view of the proposed site from here. I can already see wind turbines at Seamer which are miles away.
“It’s a pity developers have used wide angle photos to show what will be six 410ft high wind turbines atop a 100-150ft high hill.
“This scheme’s on a beauty spot right in the centre of Cleveland.
“You’ll be able to see these turbines not only from Guisborough, but from surrounding towns and villages.
“The Government says the main reason for turning these turbines down is if they ‘damage the landscape’, he said.
“These will be nearly twice the height of the Transporter Bridge.”
Retired occupational therapist Jennifer Creek, 63, of Guisborough, loves wind turbines.
But she said: “I don’t like that the developers have used wide angle in their artists’ impressions, or any attempt to manipulate people’s views.”
Mum-of-one Alison Manley, 46, of Guisborough, said: “It’s not a fair representation.
“I’m not opposed to wind turbines, but they should not damage the landscape.”
Pensioner Charles Daynes, 79, of Guisborough, said: “Thousands are going to be able to see these. They might be much bigger than people realise.
“This isn’t a fair representation.”
The photos shown at the initial Guisborough consultation were much bigger and clearer.
As reported, the site off Wilton Lane will cover about 250 acres.
Phil Dyke, Banks Renewables development director, said “The detailed visualisations we’ve displayed provide an accurate representation of how the proposed wind farm could sit in the local landscape and have helped set a clear context in which the project can be viewed from local communities.”
