Turbines plan angers residents

Plans for the construction of two wind turbines at St Fergus Moss are still very much on the cards following a decision by Aberdeenshire councillors.
The proposed project involves expanding an existing windfarm by building two 100-metre turbines at the site.
It had been recommended for rejection by planners, but members of the Buchan Area Committee deferred making a decision on the project to allow discussions between the applicant and the MoD to continue.
The committee heard that the MoD had objected to the project, claiming interference with radar equipment at RAF Buchan was their principle concern.
But Grant Mackie of developers Greenspan spoke at the council meeting and said that the applicant had been working with the Ministry of Defence despite opportunities to do so being “very limited”.
Mr Mackie commented: “I believe extending the windfarm would be of huge benefit. We could achieve meaningful wind output which could generate power for 2,500 homes.”
However, the prospect of new wind turbines has provoked anger from local residents.
Bill Innes, who lives two kilometres from the site of the proposed turbine project, said: “I am really angry about this. All of the people who are in favour of the development appear to either have vested interests in the project or are not from the area. The people who have responded favourably to the consultation are from Ellon, Methlick and Turriff, but these people won’t be affected by the turbines.
“If I wanted to build a conservatory with a tiled roof, I would have to notify my neighbours first. But we weren’t informed about the project until we read about it in the Buchanie.
“Ten turbines have already been granted planning permission with another eight proposed. We bought this property because of the view but this will be completely spoiled because we will be able to see nine turbines from our kitchen window.”
Fellow neighbour Dave Thompson added: “No-one was notified of this project that we know of, we should have been informed.”
