MoD: Wind turbine will interfere with radar

Defence chiefs have added their voices to growing protests against a new wind turbine in a beauty spot.

Proposals have been unveiled for a turbine measuring almost 70m in the village of Rudston, near Bridlington.

It would be close to the UK’s tallest standing prehistoric monolith and visible from the house where East Riding author Winifred Holtby grew up.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the turbine would compromise air surveillance in the area.

In a letter to the planning office at East Riding Council, the MoD said: “The turbine will be 11.4km from, detectable by and will cause unacceptable interference to the radar at RAF Staxton Wold.

“Trials carried out in 2005 concluded wind turbines can have detrimental effects on the operation of radar which include the desensitisation of radar in the vicinity of the turbines and the creation of ‘false’ aircraft returns.

“The probability of the radar detecting aircraft flying over or in the vicinity of the turbines would be reduced and the RAF would be unable to provide a full air surveillance service in the area.”

The MoD said the problem could be overcome if developers installed flashing infrared lights at the top of the generator.

Walkers and the Bridlington Civic Society have also raised concerns.

Peter Ayling, of the Ramblers’ Association, told planners the turbine would damage the area’s beauty and blight views of “the village of Rudston and its unique standing stone”.

And the Civic Society is concerned the turbine could smooth the way for more applications in the East Yorkshire countryside.

Group secretary Maureen Bell said wind turbines are creating “an industrial landscape that circles Bridlington like a collar”.

She said: “It seems such a shame this very beautiful landscape is now almost an industrial landscape.

“The turbine would make an extremely big difference. It would be as visible for miles around as the turbines at Lissett are.

“We would like to think of ourselves as a green society but we’re not wholly convinced of the efficacy of turbines.”

Rudston Parish Council objects and more than 100 homeowners have written to planners with their views.

Lady Juliet MacDonald lives in Thorpe Hall stately home and runs a campsite on her land. She said: “Wind turbines above 20m in height should not be built around Rudston village.

“The application site is far too close to the centre of the village.”

English Heritage has yet to submit its views on the turbine plans.
